As U.S. President Trump approaches his "first hundred days in office," debate over his tariff policies continues to intensify. Recently, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), representing West Coast dockworkers, issued a stern warning, criticizing the Trump administration's tariff policy as "reckless." They argue that it has not only strained relations with U.S. allies but also stands to severely harm American workers and the economy.
The ILWU, a union primarily representing dockworkers on the U.S. West Coast, Hawaii, and British Columbia, Canada, is often described as "the aristocrats of the working class" due to their high wages and crucial role in global economic logistics. In a statement released on Monday, the union candidly expressed: "Tariffs are taxes. The short-sighted and reckless policies of the Trump administration are already destroying American workers and damaging critical economic sectors."
The union pointed out that Trump's tariff policy not only heightens international trade tensions but directly attacks the working class, disrupting global supply chains and jeopardizing thousands of jobs. The ILWU emphasized that the tariff policy will lead to higher prices for essential goods in the U.S., exacerbate the housing crisis, and put more pressure on the working class.
Although the Trump administration has defended its tariff plans as a means of bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S., experts are concerned that such policies might prompt manufacturers to relocate production to other regions, ultimately harming U.S. economic growth. The ILWU believes that Trump's tariff plan doesn't reflect the "America First" principle but instead places American workers at a disadvantage, resulting in fewer jobs, rising prices, and increased economic instability.
The union's statement noted that decades of free trade agreements have indeed negatively impacted American workers, but Trump's tariff policy seems more like a disguise for "fair trade" policies, prioritizing corporate profits over high-wage jobs in America. The ILWU demands that trade policies should be fairer, prioritize the rights of American union workers, and not be based on Trump's spur-of-the-moment decisions.
On the same day the ILWU issued its statement, Washington State Democratic Senator Patty Murray met with unions and local businesses affected by the tariff war to further discussions regarding tariff policies.
