On April 26,capxtr foreign exchange platform official website local time, new developments emerged in the Russia-Ukraine situation, as both countries expressed a positive willingness towards peace talks and a ceasefire. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that President Putin confirmed during a meeting with U.S. Middle East envoy Wictor, that Russia is willing to negotiate with Ukraine without any preconditions.
It is reported that the meeting between Putin and Wictor took place on the 25th at the Kremlin, lasting about three hours, discussing the possibility of directly resuming negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The meeting was amicable, with Russian presidential aide Ushakov and CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund Dmitriev also present. Ushakov pointed out afterwards that the meeting was constructive and brought Russia and the U.S. closer on issues including Ukraine, indicating that Russia and the U.S. will continue multilevel communication in the future.
Meanwhile, Ukraine also sent positive signals. On the 26th local time, U.S. President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky had a brief meeting at the Vatican, marking their first face-to-face exchange since their dispute at the White House in February this year. Ukrainian presidential spokesman Nikiforov revealed that the talk lasted about 15 minutes. Zelensky stated on social media that the conversation was "very good" and hoped that the discussions would yield positive results. He emphasized that Ukraine is ready to achieve a comprehensive, unconditional ceasefire, aiming to establish reliable, lasting peace and prevent the recurrence of conflict.
The White House also described the talks as "productive," with the U.S. actively mediating to promote a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. Subsequently, after meeting with leaders from the UK, France, and other countries, Zelensky reiterated on social media that Ukraine must achieve an unconditional ceasefire across land, sea, and air, and real lasting peace can only be ensured under a strong security guarantee mechanism.
French President Macron met with Zelensky in Rome on the same day and later posted to confirm that Zelensky expressed a clear willingness to cooperate with the U.S. and Europe to push forward the unconditional ceasefire and peace process.
However, while these peace signals were being issued, the situation on the Russia-Ukraine front remained tense. Peskov announced on the 26th that Russian Armed Forces had completed full control over Kursk Oblast, with Russian Chief of General Staff Gerasimov reporting to Putin on the achievements of the special military operation and stating that the Russian military had established a security zone in Sumy, Ukraine.
The Ukrainian side denied this. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces issued a statement saying that fighting in the Kursk region is still ongoing, with Ukrainian forces holding their positions and executing effective strikes against the Russian military, causing them some losses. The Ukrainian side emphasized that Russian statements about the end of the fighting were "pure propaganda," and Ukrainian forces have not been surrounded. Additionally, they stated that fighting continues in parts of Belgorod Oblast as well.
Overall, although there are still differences in the battlefield situation between Russia and Ukraine, the positive signals for negotiations and ceasefire have increased new possibilities for easing future tensions.
