The United States Army will mark its 250th anniversary on June 14, coincidentally the 79th birthday of former President Trump. To commemorate, an unprecedented grand military parade will be held in Washington. This event not only serves as a tribute to active and retired military personnel but also reignites the heated debate surrounding Trump's personal political intentions.
Historic Parade Arrangement
According to the White House, the parade aims to honor the military's historical legacy and valorous sacrifice, involving nearly 7,000 service members. They will wear uniforms representing every major war since the War of Independence, marching along Constitution Avenue. A focal point of the celebration will be the American main battle tank, the M1 Abrams, with up to 25 tanks expected to enter the city. This 54.5-ton tank ranked among the top five global tanks in the "National Interest" 2024 rankings.
Additionally, the parade will feature an armored and aviation formation comprising 150 military vehicles and 50 helicopters, starting from the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and proceeding to the National Mall.
Expensive Costs and Urban Concerns
The celebration's budget is projected to reach $25 million to $45 million. To prevent heavy tanks from damaging Washington's streets, the military will lay heavy metal plates at key turns of the parade route to ensure tanks pass without cracking the pavement. Nonetheless, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has expressed concern, insisting that repair costs be included in the budget.
Officials warn that the simultaneous advance of 25 tanks will create significant noise, along with immense pressure on traffic, security, and maintenance.
Celebrating the Military or the Individual?
During his presidency, Trump advocated for a military parade, which was previously rejected by the Department of Defense due to high costs and the strain on city infrastructure. This parade is seen as the fulfillment of his long-held aspiration. Critics argue that although it is officially a tribute to the military, its coincidence with Trump's birthday raises questions of personal versus public celebration.
Democrats have expressed clear opposition to the event. Representative Steve Cohen has introduced a bill to prohibit federal funds from being used for any parade under the guise of celebrating a personal birthday or milestone.
More Political Intentions?
Beyond the parade, there is speculation that Trump might push to establish May 8 as "Victory Day," commemorating victory in the European theater of World War II. While this idea is yet to be realized, he has publicly stated that the United States has never officially celebrated the victory of World War II, and now is the time to "start anew."
Although the event itself has military commemorative significance, its political symbolism and resource allocation will likely continue to spark controversy in the coming period.
