On April 13, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that although both the U.S. and Russian presidents have expressed political willingness to meet, the specific time for such talks has not been determined. Both sides are still preparing for the appropriate timing. Peskov highlighted that despite numerous issues between the two nations, this meeting with the U.S. Special Representative for Middle East Affairs has paved the way for further presidential-level talks.
Meanwhile, on the 12th, U.S. President Trump mentioned that the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have a chance to progress smoothly, although he emphasized that the talks would eventually require "compromise or action." Trump remains optimistic, believing that progress on the Russia-Ukraine situation is likely soon. U.S. Secretary of State Lavrov also commented that Trump has a deeper understanding of the conflict than other Western leaders, pointing out that NATO's expansion is one of the roots of the conflict.
However, the actual situation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains severe. Ukrainian President Zelensky issued a statement on the same day, stating that a missile strike by Russia on the city of Sumy had resulted in 31 deaths and over 80 injuries. The attack occurred in downtown Sumy, causing significant property damage. Ukrainian authorities are currently carrying out emergency rescue operations.
In addition, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Ukrainian forces launched attacks on the energy facilities in Russia's Belgorod region on Friday and Saturday, violating the previous agreement between both parties to cease attacks on energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, Russian air defense systems also shot down a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet, along with several missiles and drones.
French President Macron remarked that Russia's attack on Sumy highlights the urgency of ceasefire negotiations, urging the international community to intensify efforts to promote a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
With diplomatic engagements between the U.S. and Russia, and President Trump maintaining a positive outlook on negotiations, the progress in the coming days will determine whether there can be a turnaround in the Russia-Ukraine situation. However, the actual military conflict has not ceased, and the Ukrainian people continue to suffer substantial loss of life and property.
