On Sunday local time, U.S. President Trump revealed to reporters that his administration had "very good talks with Iran," hinting at possible good news regarding the Iran nuclear issue. He stated, "Let's see what happens, but I think we will have some good news about Iran." Trump further stated that significant progress was made in the negotiations but did not provide specific details. He added, "I don't know whether I'll tell you good news or bad news in the next two days, but I have a hunch I might be telling you some good news."
It is reported that under Oman's active mediation, the United States and Iran held their fifth round of indirect nuclear talks last Friday in Rome, Italy. This meeting lasted three hours and was the fifth non-face-to-face consultation held by both parties since April 12. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi commented after the meeting, describing it as one of the "most professional" rounds of negotiation. The Iranian side firmly expressed its position, believing "we are on a reasonable path, which in itself is progress."
Araghchi also mentioned that the various suggestions and solutions proposed will be submitted to their respective governments for evaluation, and the next round of talks will be arranged based on this. He emphasized that Iran will continue to participate in the negotiations with patience and calmness but will not compromise on key issues, including uranium enrichment.
On the same day, Omani Foreign Minister Badr stated on social media that the US and Iran made "some but not decisive progress" in the fifth round of talks. He pointed out that the focus in the coming days should be on clarifying remaining differences in order to jointly push for a "sustainable and decent agreement."
Despite the positive negotiation atmosphere, the core disagreement over uranium enrichment remains prominent. The US insists that Iran should completely halt all levels of uranium enrichment to prevent nuclear weapon development, while Iran asserts that moderate uranium enrichment is its legitimate right for the peaceful use of nuclear energy and refuses to accept the US demand for "zero enrichment."
The main goal of this negotiation is to seek a balanced agreement that, on one hand, prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, while on the other hand, can lead to a gradual lifting of harsh economic sanctions by the US. However, Iran has stated that the timing and location of the next round of talks have not yet been determined, and there remains uncertainty about whether the differences can be narrowed and an agreement reached.
