Putin-Trump Call Focuses Again on Russia-Ukraine Conflict and Iran Nuclear Issue
On June 4th local time, U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin spoke again for approximately 75 minutes. This marked their fourth dialogue since 2025. The conversation covered several sensitive topics, focusing on the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ukraine's attack on Russian military airports, and the Iran nuclear issue.
Trump Denies Knowledge of Ukrainian Plans to Attack Russian Airport
According to Trump, a major focus of the call was Ukraine's attack on a Russian strategic bomber airport. He stated that the U.S. was unaware of the event beforehand and did not participate in the decision-making. Trump noted that Putin had a "very resolute attitude" during the talk, saying Russia would respond to the attack. He emphasized that it was a "good call" but not one that could immediately resolve the situation peacefully.
Russian presidential aide Ushakov later confirmed that Putin expressed dissatisfaction during the call over Ukraine's attacks on Russian civilian facilities during negotiations and gave detailed descriptions of the situation.
Both Sides Agree to Keep Dialogue Open but No Substantial Breakthrough
Ushakov stated that the two leaders reviewed recent negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, Turkey, and agreed that the talks were "useful." Both agreed to continue contact on the Ukraine issue in the future.
However, Ushakov added that the possibility of a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Zelensky was not discussed, nor was the content of a draft memorandum between Russia and Ukraine. This indicates that while there has been progress in negotiations, political-level contacts have not yet substantively advanced.
Iran Nuclear Issue Raised Again; Trump Seeks Russian Assistance
Apart from the Russia-Ukraine situation, Trump also brought up the issue of Iran's nuclear weapons with Putin. He stated that Iran must "make a decision quickly" to clarify its stance on nuclear weapons development. He claimed that he and Putin share the view that Iran "cannot possess nuclear weapons."
More importantly, Trump revealed that Putin expressed willingness to engage in talks with Iran, potentially playing a positive role in resolving the current nuclear impasse. "Perhaps it can help bring a swift resolution," Trump expressed his expectations.
Fourth Dialogue of the Year; High-Frequency Contact Maintained Between Russian and American Leaders
It is reported that this call marks the fourth communication between Putin and Trump in 2025. The previous call took place on May 19th, during which they exchanged preliminary views on the Russia-Ukraine negotiation framework. This in-depth 75-minute call indicates that despite numerous structural contradictions in Russia-U.S. relations, both leaders are willing to keep strategic communication channels open.
In the future, with the further evolution of the Russia-Ukraine situation and potential escalation of the Iran nuclear issue, it remains to be seen whether communication between Trump and Putin can help ease tensions and promote a diplomatic resolution.
