U.S. President Trump, on his way to Qatar on Wednesday, stated that his "schedule is full" and he is unlikely to go to Turkey on Thursday for the Russia-Ukraine peace talks. However, he did not completely rule out the possibility of adjusting his schedule last minute or traveling there at a later date. His comments have fueled further speculation on whether he will participate in the Russia-Ukraine peace process.
Trump: Open to attending if it fosters peace
In an interview with reporters on Air Force One, Trump emphasized, "Our schedule is fully packed, you understand, everything is arranged." Yet, he added that if Putin also attended and the talks seemed promising, he would consider going. "If it can end the conflict and save thousands of lives, I am willing to consider attending."
Previously, Trump had publicly expressed consideration of attending the peace summit in Istanbul. However, his schedule still includes the originally planned visit to the UAE with no substantive changes made. During his speech on Wednesday, he also mentioned that he is not aware whether Russian President Putin will attend, but "he (Putin) wants me there."
Attendance may depend on Putin's decision
Trump's remarks suggest that whether he personally attends the summit in Turkey largely depends on Putin's actions. A senior Turkish official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the media that they assess it is unlikely that Trump will visit on Thursday, but do not rule out the possibility of a sudden trip in the coming days, especially if Putin decides to go to Turkey as well. Preparations for reception and security are being carried out simultaneously.
The Ukrainian President Zelensky has clearly stated that he is only willing to engage in face-to-face talks if Putin personally attends. All signs indicate that the key figure for this Russia-Ukraine summit remains Russian President Putin, with Trump's involvement potentially being one of the crucial factors for a breakthrough at the summit.
Other U.S. officials to attend on behalf
Despite Trump's indecision about his attendance, the United States will send a high-level delegation to participate in the talks. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will attend as the chief representative, accompanied by White House envoys Witkoff and Kellogg, continuing efforts to ease regional tensions and diplomatic mediation.
Kremlin spokesperson Peskov stated on Wednesday that Russia is not yet ready to announce its delegation list for the talks, hinting that they are still evaluating whether to send high-level representatives.
Against a backdrop of heightened geopolitical tension and prolonged conflict, whether this summit can drive substantial progress in dialogue and whether all leaders will attend will become significant variables influencing the future trajectory of the situation.
