At its annual Connect conference on Thursday, Facebook announced that it is changing its company name to Meta.
The company’s overarching mission and corporate structure will remain unchanged, but starting on December 1st, it will begin trading under MVRS as opposed to FB.
Meta’s apps and their brands won’t be changing, however. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger will all be staying the same, so you haven't got to worry about needing to visit meta.com to log into your Facebook account.
In addition to the name change, the company revealed its plans for what it called the “metaverse” and explained the metaverse meaning. Designed to be a new way for people to interact with each other online, the metaverse will provide ultra-realistic online social interactions. People will be able to socialize, work, and play in a 3D virtual reality environment using virtual reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphone apps, and more.
Technology has got a long way to go before Meta’s true vision for the metaverse can ever be realized, however. In his prerecorded presentation, Mark Zuckerberg talked about how he believes that TVs will one day be obsolete, replaced by holograms. These holograms, as well as other physical objects such as artwork and video games, will be able to be transported into the metaverse to share with your friends.
It’s in its infancy, but Meta’s plans for the metaverse are ridiculously exciting. The buzz it's generating online is huge, with lots of people wondering “what is the metaverse?” If it can shake up how we socialize with each other online even half as much as it promises, it will massively change our lives.
